My Rating: 4/5 Stars

So, I really enjoyed this novel, I thought it was entertaining, but it fell short on a few things for me, which is why I couldn’t give it a 5/5 stars. I will first give a small summary and then I will give details in regards to why I loved it and what it was about it that I didn’t love.

Summary :

So this book follows two characters, a girl named Laia who is a slave and a boy named Elias who is a soldier. After a tragedy in Laia’s life she is thrust into the world of the resistance. Elias has trained at Blackcliff academy for almost his whole life and he has become one of the finest soldiers they have ever had. Both characters fight for freedom that they will never have. Although each of them is captive in different ways, they have a lot in common.

Why it was good:

Overall this book was entertaining, it was fast paced and it was enjoyable. I really liked both main characters, I like how they were both flawed in their own way. The writing was engaging and the story had so many high points that it felt like a roller coaster ride. 🙂

Why it wasn’t a 5 star read:

The biggest reason I didn’t give it five stars was because I didn’t like the execution of the duel perspective. It felt like each chapter was left on a cliff hanger, which is intended to grip you to keep reading. The issue was that the characters were not often together, so the cliff hanger would not be answered for 2 chapters, and by that time i had forgotten it even existed, and it left me annoyed.

Apart from that though I enjoyed the novel, with the exception of slow middle that dragged on for a little bit and what I found to be a slightly frustrating ending.

All and all though, good read, I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a YA fantasy.
